The process of changing one’s name in Kenya is governed by The Registration of Persons Act, The Births and Deaths Registration Act, and the Registration of Documents (Change of Name) Regulations. To legally change one’s name, a deed poll needs to be registered this is done by an Advocate. Upon registration, the Registrar will cause the Deed Poll to be advertised in the Kenya Gazette. The consequence of the change of name is that the applicant will need to apply for a fresh national ID Card to reflect the new name

What do you need to do?

1. Gather Required Documents:

Start by collecting the necessary documents including a copy of your birth certificate or other valid identification.

2. A sworn affidavit detailing the rationale behind the name change

   Affidavit Swearing: Visit a lawyer or a commissioner for oaths to create a sworn affidavit. This document should state your present name, the desired new name, and the motives prompting the change. Ensure the affidavit bears appropriate signatures and endorsements.

3. Publication in newspapers: It could be necessary to publish your intent to change your name in local newspapers.

Newspaper Announcement: In Kenya, it is customary to announce your intention to change your name through publication in local newspapers. This step serves as a public declaration of your name alteration and provides an opportunity for objections to be raised.

4. Publication in Gazette: Following the newspaper notices, you'll need to have your name change formally published in the Kenya Gazette, an official government publication. This step adds further legitimacy to the name change.

5. Application for Name Change: Obtain an application form for changing your name from the Registrar of Births and Deaths office or the relevant government agency.

6. Submission of Documents: Present the following documents to the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the appropriate government office:

• Sworn affidavit

• Copies of the newspaper announcements

• Name change application form

• Payment of Fees: Fulfill any applicable fees associated with processing the name change application.

7. Verification and Approval: The authorities will review your application and supporting documents. If all requirements are met, they will grant approval for the name change.

8. Update Identity Documents: Once the name change is authorized, you'll need to update your official identification documents, including national ID cards, passports, driver's licenses, and any other pertinent records.
